Tail hook

When the window is closed the casement stay or pullback is secured in a tail hook fixed on the window frame or the mullion.

Thermal bridge

A term used about a narrow area of building’s weather shield with a poorer insulating capacity than the surrounding construction. A through going aluminium frame between the inside and the outside is a typical thermal bridge. An insulating material is inserted - a thermal break. The aluminium profile is no longer unbroken between the outside and the inside – the thermal bridge is broken.

Tilt-and-turn hinge

Hinge developed and patented 1935 in Germany. Enables a window to either tilt inwards at the top (bottom hung), or to open inwards hinged at the side. The most common hinge in Germany.

Tilt-and-turn window

A window with an inward opening sash, which can be opened side hung (turned) and bottom hung (tilt) respectively.

Top frame

The upper part of the window frame. See also frame and transom.

Top hung window

Opening sash with a fixed centre of rotation at the top.

Tracery window

Tracery is the stonework, usually moulded brick, used to support the glass in a stained-glass window. When used in windows, it is usually supported by carved vertical shafts.

Transom

The bar between the side frames dividing the window into an upper and a lower part.

Transom light

A window placed in the top of a window frame, often with a fixed sash.
