On June 1, the VILLUM Window Collection opened its doors for the museum's first special exhibition, “Wall of Windows from The Brooking”; a unique wall of windows consisting of 68 historical windows. The exhibition was initially created by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas in connection with the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2014 and is based on the impressive collection of building components by the English architectural historian Charles Brooking.
For the opening, we invited the award-winning English architect and professor Dean Hawkes to give a lecture on the window in British architecture, and we interviewed him about the window, light, and architecture.
Regarding his lecture, Dean Hawkes stated:
“The British architectural critic Kenneth Frampton believes that the window is the most interesting building component when the forces of nature, such as light and climate, shape a building's design. Therefore, the window can impart unique regional characteristics to architecture: In this lecture, I will explore this concept through a review of selected buildings in the UK from the 16th to the 20th century."
