During the 16th century, the development of hinges made it possible to build windows with side-hung casements. Since the hinges were still expensive to make, each window usually only had one operable casement.
Side-hung casements can be inward- or outward-opening. In Central and Southern Europe, windows are often inward-opening as it is common to use external shutters as sun protection.
