Secondary glazing or winter windows are removable, secondary window casements, mounted on the inside of the existing window frame. The extra casement improves the window's insulating properties, reducing heat loss and increasing sound protection.
Public records from 1667 mention removable casements covered with oiled paper at the old Copenhagen Castle. Secondary glazing was introduced in Northern Europe around 1730.
