Around 1754 the Italian architect, Bartolomeo Rastrelli, redesigned the Russian Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg. He developed a double window where the outer sash was open at the bottom, while the inner sash opened at the top. Fresh air could thus be drawn in, pre-heated and ventilate the rooms. The design became known as the Russian Window.
