The glassblowing technique was presumably first used in the Middle East in the last century BC. Using a hollow iron rod fitted with a mouthpiece called a blowpipe, the glassblower blew air into the "gather" or the portion of glass, which was then worked in different ways. The technique spread to Egypt and later to the Roman Empire, where mouth-blowing became a common way to produce glass objects.
