Wired glass

Wired glass consists of two layers of glass, which are rolled together around a thin wire mesh. The glass has an uneven surface which occurs in the manufacturing process.

In the past, wired glass was used for fire protection because the wire mesh, between the glass layers, would hold the pane together when the glass was broken by the heat. Wired glass was marketed around 1898 by Pilkington Brothers in England.
